WAKEFIELD MORRIS DANCERS SIDMOUTH FOLK FESTIVAL 1987
WAKEFIELD MORRIS DANCERS SIDMOUTH1987
THE FIRST MIXED MORRIS TEAM AT SIDMOUTH?
Workshops Backstage On stage In action The bigger option
That's Meg on the mic and George and Gerry on the floor-helping that is. George in the distance and Gerry with her back to the camera.Siobhan Owen in there as well? Taffy Thomas considering the reaction when the die hards spot a mixed side dancing.I'm pretty sure that's a Trefor Owen look-alike, no clogs in eveidence All set ad ready to go. Derek, Ken, Judith and Gerry backed up by Alan, Doug, Jenny and Meg. Julie Quinn and Siobhan Owen supporting.
Note the womens ribbon laces.
And we're off. Looks like Horbury Polka. Set of twelve with Julie and Siobhan dancing centres. Pete Ogly and Jenny Cropp + sax player(?) and 4 women "spare".
Greece Basques Jorrocks 1 Jorrocks 2 Carlilse
The Greeks I suspect as the white kilt is a bit of a thing with the Hellenics. Could this be the Basque team? Mr Jorrocks show how to peform Cotswold with the emphasis on energy and crisp clean turn out. Leap frog as a dance move? Mythology says that to qualify for Jorrocks being able to leap frog a standard post box was a vital requirement. Carlisle doing their rapper thing. Cotswold, Border and Longsword also featured in their performances because Carlisle was a bit of a folk desert. .
Green Ginger Poland? Germany Poland again? Surely not Poland again?
Ken Watson provides the music as Sue and the girls provide the delightful stepping. Hmm this might be the Polish team. I'm confident this is the German team. Siverko from the USSR? Lots of costumes, blonde wigs and heavies in homburgs and overcoats keeping an eye on the dancers. Siverko again. The same outfit can be seen on Youtube item of Billingham International Folklore 2014
Ireland 1 Ireland 2 Greece 2 Basques 2 Youngsters
Enter the Irish. Pre Riverdance the look was so much more about kilts and embroidery. Ringlets are the thing. It's the Greeks again If I'm right this is the Basques again. Work shopping dance and performance for youngsters at the seaside. Obviously hornpipes and sailors kit. Steer clear of shanties they can get a bit rude.
Youngsters 2
We thought our workshops were well attended. Where did this lot gather? Wonder if any of them grew up to be Morris dancers?
